African Mud-Cloth Spear Pendant Cowrie Shell Garnet Necklace OOAK
Details: Bone spear shape African mud-cloth-style bead centers this gorgeous modern tribal necklace. The spear forms an abstract body below a sterling silver neck with a square garnet cabochon face and a granulated sterling crown. (At least that's what it looks like to me.) The entire pendant is 2" (50mm) long.
The necklace is a two-strand graduated collar. The shorter inner strand is 18" (45.7 cm). The longer strand is 20" (51 cm). It drapes really nicely.
The upper strand contains seven wire-wrapped cowrie (cowry) shells, which stand for wealth and fertility. Throughout Africa and the Caribbean, cowrie shells are a symbol of Goddess protection.
Four long mud-cloth bone tubes are up-strand from the center pendant. The patterns are painted on the bead with a mineral-rich mud and left out in the sun to bake.
The rest of the beads are garnet, gray-black iridescent (dyed) cultured freshwater pearls, and sterling silver.
